In mid-1997, drummer Khachaturian left the band when he broke his hand after punching a wall during an argument, consigning him to a year of recovery. He was replaced by John Dolmayan , who the band knew after sharing a rehearsal space with his band. Khachaturian subsequently co-founded The Apex Theory , which included former Soil bassist Dave Hakopyan.
