In the City showcase performance

As the band was grumbling about a “vice-like grip” that one of the Camden promoters had on them, Harvey suggested they book their own gig at Dingwalls. That night, they managed to flog 50 copies of Safety. From that point onwards, Harvey was generally considered to be Coldplay’s manager – and he eventually decided to drop out of his course at Oxford’s Trinity College to dedicate himself to the role full-time. Coldplay played a few more shows over the summer, and – much to Martin’s dismay – he tried to get Tim Rice-Oxley to come in and play keyboards, but the rest of the band shot that idea down. By September 1998, Coldplay were playing Manchester’s In the City showcase, where they caught the eye of A&R scout Debs Wild. Safety was followed by a cassette demo that included “Ode to Deodorant” and “Brothers & Sisters”.
