Nach der Veröffentlichung von The Colour and the Shape im Mai 1997 wurde Taylor Hawkins als neuer Schlagzeuger engagiert, der vorher für Alanis Morissette tätig war. Kurz danach stieg auch Pat Smear aus der Band aus. Ihn ersetzte zunächst Franz Stahl (Ex- Scream -Mitglied), der aber 1999 gefeuert wurde, und schließlich Chris Shiflett von No Use for a Name . 1999 entstand noch ohne Shiflett das dritte Album There Is Nothing Left to Lose , für das Dave Grohl alle Gitarrenparts und nach Aussage von Taylor Hawkins auch 50 % der Drumparts selbst einspielte, das Hit-Singles wie Learn to Fly , Generator und Breakout enthielt und bei den Grammys als bestes Rock-Album (2001) ausgezeichnet wurde.
