For the whole of the St. Anger recording session, Robert Rock was on bass duties – and even ended up playing the bass for some live shows while they were doing it. And once the album was all wrapped up, Metallica started to look for someone to replace Newsted for good. Loads of bassists turned up to audition – including Pepper Keenan, Jeordie White and Scott Reeder – but after three months of trying to find the right guy, they finally settled on Robert Trujillo from Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne’s band. Meanwhile Newsted had already bailed and was rocking out with Voivod. He even ended up filling in for Trujillo in Osbourne’s band during the 2003 Ozzfest tour which just happened to also be a tour for Voivod.
