signed six-album contract with EMI

Late in 1991, Colin bumped into EMI’s A&R man Keith Wozencroft at a record shop and just handed him a copy of the demo. Wozencroft was a fan, and he showed up to see the band play at the Jericho Tavern that November. That was their eighth gig, but somehow they’d already managed to impress a bunch of A&R reps. There was even a glowing review in Melody Maker – though they did say the band’s name was “awful”. Anyway, by 21 December, On a Friday had signed a six-album deal with EMI, and as a result, they changed their name to Radiohead. The name came from a track on the Talking Heads album True Stories (1986) – a song called “Radio Head”.
