Newsted bails on Metallica on January 17, 2001 & before you can say “recording studio” hes outta the band . He says he left because of ” private and personal reasons ” and also because he’d done some serious damage to himself over the years from playing too hard. In a chat with the lads from Metallica in Playboy he reveals he wanted to chuck out an album with his side project , Echobrain . To which Hetfield says ” if you\re off doing a side project that means less focus on Metallica ” & makes the point that side projects are kinda like cheating on your wife – it takes away from the main event. Newsted comes back swinging saying Hetfield does a bit of moonlighting himself – he did vocals on a Corrosion of Conformity album & even got a song in the South Park movie. Hetfield fires back saying his name isnt on any of those records & he isnt trying to sell them – but then asks like , where does it end? Does that mean he starts touring with Echobrain? selling T shirts? is it his band now?
Newsted left Metallica
