The band’s seventh studio album, Exit Wounds , was released on July 9, 2021 on New West Records . With the release of the album, Dylan reiterated that the band’s sound is an extension of his solo work, saying “There’s never been one lineup that’s made two records. So the constant is myself. If you think there’s a sound of The Wallflowers, I’m making that with my choices in the studio and with my songs and voice.” It was produced by Butch Walker , and the band announced a 53-date arena tour to promote the album (which was postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). About writing the album, Dylan stated, “I was just also writing during a time when the world felt like it was falling apart. That changes the way you address even the simplest things, because you have panic in your mind all the time. You have anxiety… you also have hope… it’s all in there.” The album was well received and scored the band their highest position on a Billboard albums chart, with the album debuting at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart. The band promoted the new album with a number of television appearances, debuting their new single on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on April 8, 2021, in addition to performances on Good Morning America , The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , and other network television shows.
