Puget became the band’s lead guitarist for its next album, Black Sails in the Sunset (1999). The release maintains a punk rock or hardcore sound, exploring bleak themes with traces of Romanticism . In 2003, The New York Times reflected on it as showcasing Havok’s “develop[ment] into a singer and songwriter of substance”. The influence of gothic rock is also apparent and Dexter Holland provides backing vocals on two tracks.
