What would become Fuel was formed in 1989 in the western Tennessee town of Kenton when childhood friends Carl Bell and Jeff Abercrombie began playing music together in junior high school and played in various garage bands.
Blur were formed in December 1988 when bassist Alex James joined Damon Albarn’s band, Circus, and they changed the name to Seymour after J. D. Salinger ‘s Seymour: An Introduction .
Already in the band were drummer Dave Rowntree, who had joined in October, and guitarist Graham Coxon, Albarn’s childhood friend from Essex , who was studying at the University of London ‘s Goldsmiths College along with Albarn and James.
The song hit No. 2, on the Hot 100 and Hysteria finally reached the top of the US Billboard 200 in July 1988.
The band’s UK success saw them nominated for the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Group.
