April 4 2009 was a big day, especially with the former bassist Jason Newsted who left in 2001 making a surprise appearance with the band at the ceremony. At first it was said that Trujillo had agreed not to play but that turned out to be a load of old codswallop. As it happened both Trujillo and Newsted took to the stage during a set of Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman. Ray Burton the dad of the late Cliff Burton accepted the honor on his behalf. Even though he wasnt officially being inducted with the rest of the band Metallica made Dave Mustaine an offer to take part in the induction ceremony much to everyone elses surprise he declined because of his touring commitments in Europe.
both Trujillo and Newsted were on stage
