In 1989, Metallica got its very first Grammy Award nomination for …And Justice for All in the new Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrument category. Metallica was the favorite to win but the award went to Jethro Tull for the album Crest of a Knave . Fans and the press were all over the result as Metallica was standing off stage waiting to get the award after they’d played the song “One” . Jethro Tull’s manager had actually told them not to turn up to the ceremony cos he thought Metallica would win. The award ended up in Entertainment Weekly’s “Grammy’s 10 Biggest Upsets” list.
